How to Run Hardware Diagnostics on the LCD Screen of Dell Laptop

Laptops have become an integral part of our lives. Week days are generally spent with the laptop either at the work place or at home. Everyone has become so obsessed because the system comes with a number of applications that allows us to do all our work from one sitting position. Dell is the favorite and the most used brand in this case.

Sometimes, you may find some problems in its screen and it is all normal as the system is based upon a number of underlying technologies and so they can budge at times. In case of Dell PC’s, they come with a built-in diagnostic tool that lets you decide if the screen abnormality is a result of problem with a LCD screen of the PC or with the video card (GPU) and PC settings.

If you notice the problems such as flickering, distortion, clarity issues, fuzzy or blurry image, horizontal or vertical lines, color fade etc. then you can isolate the LCD screen by running the built-in self-test (BIST).

Method 1 of hardware diagnostics

  • Switch off the power of your PC.
  • Try disconnecting any peripherals connected to the system and connecting the AC adapter (charger).
  • Your screen should be clean (no dust particles should be present on it).
  • Click and hold onto the D key and power on the PC to enter LCD built-in self-test (BIST) mode. Don’t let go of the hold of D key until you witness the whole screen change colors.
  • The colors will be black, white, green, red and blue.
  • Check the screen properly for the abnormalities.
  • Click on Esc key to exit.

Method 2 of hardware diagnostics

  • Switch off your system.
  • Try disconnecting any peripherals connected to the system and connecting the AC adapter (charger).
  • Your screen should be clean (no dust particles should be present on it).
  • Click and hold onto the Fn key until you witness the ePSA or PSA diagnostics mode. Don’t let go of the hold of key until you see it.
  • It will run a series of tests on the PC.
  • If you come across the message ‘Do you see the color bars? Yes/No’ then click on the N key to enter BIST.
  • You will see colors like blue, black, red, green and white.
  • Check the screen properly for the abnormalities.
  • PC will restart.
